UMAMI is proudly located on Six Nations of the Grand River, home to the Haudenosaunee people and the only First Nation community where all six nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy — the Mohawk, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Seneca, and Tuscarora — live together. We recognize the enduring relationship between the Haudenosaunee and this land, and the generations who have cared for its waters, cultivated community here, and sustained cultural knowledge, family, and ways of life.
The lands along the Grand River are part of the Haldimand Tract, established in 1784 for the Six Nations and originally extending six miles on either side of the Grand River. Of the approximately 950,000 acres set aside at that time, only a fraction remains as the present-day Six Nations territory. We recognize this history and the continuing importance of Haudenosaunee sovereignty, stewardship, and connection to the land.
For UMAMI, this acknowledgement is personal. Our restaurant grows from a family business built on Six Nations and from a commitment to creating opportunity, gathering, and long-term benefit within the community. We are grateful to serve food here, to welcome neighbours and visitors to Six Nations, and to contribute to a community whose identity and future extend far beyond the walls of our restaurant.
